Stenocereus eichlamii is a species of Stenocereus in the cactus family(Cactaceae). Spanish common names are "Guanocal", "Órgano", "Pitahaya" and "Tuna". The epithet honors the German collector Friedrich Eichlam .
description
Stenocereus eichlamii grows tree-like with branching, upright shoots and reaches heights of up to 6 meters. The shoots often have a transverse banding that shows the end of the annual increase in length. There are eight to ten broad and rounded ribs . The four to six thorns cannot be divided into central and radial spines. They are up to 2 inches long. One of them is arranged more in the middle and stands out.
The funnel-shaped, white flowers are 6 to 7 inches long and open at night. The probably ellipsoidal fruits are reddish, have thorns and are up to 7 centimeters long. They contain a white pulp .
Distribution, systematics and endangerment
Stenocereus eichlamii is common in the Mexican states of Chiapas and Yucatán as well as in Guatemala . It was first described as Lemaireocereus eichlamii in 1920 by Nathaniel Lord Britton and Joseph Nelson Rose . Helia Bravo Hollis placed the species in the genus Stenocereus in 1978 .
In the Red List of Threatened Species of the IUCN , the species is called " Data Deficient (DD) ", i. H. with insufficient data.
