Stenocereus kerberi is a species of the genus Stenocereus in the cactus family(Cactaceae). The specific epithet honors Edmund Kerber, who collected cacti in Mexico and sent them to Berlin.

description

Stenocereus kerberi grows columnar with numerous branched shoots and reaches heights of 2 to 3 meters. Often dense bushes are formed. The shoots, which are clearly angular in cross section, have a diameter of 3 to 8 centimeters. There are four notched ribs that are more or less clearly divided into cusps. The one to four grayish central spines are 4 to 5 inches long. The ten to 16 radiant radial spines are also grayish. They have a length of 1 to 2 centimeters.

The slender funnel-shaped, deep pink flowers open during the day and are 10 to 12 centimeters long. The spherical, red fruits reach a diameter of up to 2.5 centimeters and have a persistent flower remnant.

Distribution, systematics and endangerment

Stenocereus kerberi is common in the Mexican states of Colima , Jalisco , Nayarit and Sinaloa at altitudes from 0 to 800 m. It was first described as Cereus kerberi in 1897 by Karl Moritz Schumann . Arthur Charles Gibson and Karl E. Horak put the species in 1979 in the genus Stenocereus .

In the Red List of Threatened Species of the IUCN , the species is listed as " Least Concern (LC) ". H. listed as not endangered.
