Stenocereus chacalapensis is a species of plant in the genus Stenocereus in the cactus family(Cactaceae).

description

Stenocereus chacalapensis grows tree-like with numerous candelabra-like branched shoots and reaches heights of 10 to 15 meters. A distinct trunk is formed. The very long, gray-green shoots are upright, stand closely parallel to each other and have a diameter of up to 15 centimeters. There are seven, somewhat rounded and not notched ribs . The ten to 14 thorns cannot be clearly differentiated into central and radial spines. They are gray to black, protruding and 5 to 28 millimeters long. The shortest of them appear from the upper part of the areoles .

The funnel-shaped, fragrant, white flowers open at night and stay open until the next day. They are up to 11 centimeters long and have a diameter of 7 centimeters. The spherical, brown fruits are very thorny.

Distribution, systematics and endangerment

Stenocereus chacalapensis is common in the coastal areas of the Mexican state Oaxaca at altitudes of 180 to 600 m. It was first described as Ritterocereus chacalapensis in 1957 by Helia Bravo Hollis and Thomas Baillie MacDougall . Helia Bravo Hollis placed them in the genus Stenocereus in 1978 .

In the Red List of Threatened Species of IUCN is the species as " Critically Endangered (CR) ", d. H. listed as critically endangered.
