Stenocereus queretaroensis is a species of the genus Stenocereus in the cactus family(Cactaceae). A Spanish common name is "Pitahaya de Queretaro".

description

Stenocereus queretaroensis grows tree-shaped with numerous candelabra-like branched shoots and reaches heights of 3 to 7 meters. A distinct trunk is formed. The green, sometimes reddish, shoots have a diameter of up to 15 centimeters. There are seven to nine blunt, somewhat rounded, conspicuous ribs that are not notched. The areoles on them are covered with brown to black, felty hair . The one or two unequal white to gray central spines , which can also be missing, are up to 3 centimeters long. The bottom of them is longer. The five to six radial spines are initially whitish and later turn gray. They reach a length of 5 to 30 millimeters.

The funnel-shaped, fragrant flowers appear near the shoot tips. They open at night and stay open until the next morning. The flowers are 7.8 to 8.4 inches long and 4.5 to 6.7 inches in diameter. The flower tube is slightly bulged in the area of ​​the nectar chamber. The pericarpel and the tube are bare. The more or less spherical, green or red to purple-colored fruits reach a diameter of 5 to 6 centimeters. They are studded with thorns and hair. The flesh is white or red to purple in color.

Distribution, systematics and endangerment

Stenocereus queretaroensis is distributed in the Mexican states of Querétaro , Guanajuato , Jalisco , Colima and Michoacán in deciduous forests and dry bushes at altitudes of up to 1,800 meters. It was first described as Cereus queretaroensis in 1891 by Albert Mathsson . Franz Buxbaum placed the species in the genus Stenocereus in 1961 .

In the Red List of Threatened Species of the IUCN , the species is listed as " Least Concern (LC) ". H. listed as not endangered.
