Stenocereus laevigatus is a species of plant in the genus Stenocereus in the cactus family(Cactaceae).

description

Stenocereus laevigatus grows like a tree with numerous branched shoots and reaches heights of 5 to 7 meters. A distinct trunk is formed. The upright, narrow columnar shoots are green to gray-green. There are eight to ten rounded and wavy ribs . The single central spine is grayish. The also grayish, radiating eight radial spines are up to 1 centimeter long.

The narrow, funnel-shaped, white flowers open at night and stay open until the next morning. They are up to 8 inches long. Nothing is known about the fruit .

Distribution and systematics

Stenocereus laevigatus is common in the Mexican state of Chiapas and possibly in Guatemala . It was first described as Cereus laevigatus in 1850 by Joseph zu Salm-Reifferscheidt-Dyck . Franz Buxbaum placed the species in the genus Stenocereus in 1961 .
