Stenocereus fimbriatus is a species of plant in the genus Stenocereus in the cactus family(Cactaceae).

description

Stenocereus fimbriatus grows tree-like with numerous candelabra-like branching shoots and reaches heights of 8 to 12 meters. A distinct trunk is formed. The upright to slightly spreading shoots have a diameter of up to 30 centimeters. There are nine to twelve sharply separated ribs that are up to 1.5 centimeters high. The mostly three gray central spines have a darker tip and are up to 4 centimeters long. One of them is longer than the rest. Most of the ten radial spines are grayish.

The flowers open at night and are 7 to 9 inches long. They are greenish to slightly purple on the outside and white on the inside. The spherical, red fruits reach a diameter of up to 5 centimeters. They are studded with thorns that fall off when ripe. The pulp is red.

Distribution, systematics and endangerment

Stenocereus fimbriatus is common in Jamaica , Cuba , Haiti , the Dominican Republic, and Puerto Rico . It was first described as Cactus fimbriatus in 1785 by Jean-Baptiste de Lamarck . Alicia Lourteig placed the species in the genus Stenocereus in 1991 .

In the Red List of Threatened Species of the IUCN , the species is listed as " Least Concern (LC) ". H. listed as not endangered.
