The Gardeners' Chronicle was a British horticultural magazine published in Great Britain from 1841 to 1986 .

The magazine was founded in 1841 by Joseph Paxton , Charles Wentworth Dilke , John Lindley and William Bradbury . It originally appeared in an original newspaper format, with national and international news, but also a large number of articles by gardeners and scientists covering almost every imaginable aspect of horticulture.

The first editor was the British botanist John Lindley , later the architect, botanist and gardener Joseph Paxton . In the Gardeners' Chronicle have, among others , Charles Darwin and Joseph Dalton Hooker published.

Until 1873 the title was Gardeners 'Chronicle and Agricultural Gazette , then most of the time Gardeners' Chronicle with subtitle A weekly illustrated Journal of Horticulture and allied Subjects . From 1956 to 1963 the title was Gardeners' Chronicle and Gardening illustrated ; from 1964 to 1966 it was Gardeners' Chronicle, Gardening illustrated and the Greenhouse . From 1966 until it was discontinued in 1986, the title was again Gardeners' Chronicle with several different subtitles.

The magazine attracted attention, among other things, because of its extensive advertising section. When the demand for small glass greenhouses rose rapidly, triggered by the Great Exhibition of 1851 and a reduction in the tax on glass, the circulation was peppered with advertisements for glass houses, many of which were designed by Joseph Paxton himself. This is how Paxton created a lot of extra income.

In 1851 the edition was put at 6,500 copies. In 1986 the magazine was discontinued as such; however, it continues in a sense as part of Horticulture Week magazine .
