Maireana is a genus of plants of the subfamily of Camphorosmoideae within the family of amaranthaceae (Amaranthaceae).

Maireana species are perennial herbaceous plants or shrubs . The alternate leaves are often fleshy or succulent .

The sexes can be distributed as follows: dioecious ; or all flowers hermaphroditic; or hermaphroditic and female flowers on one and hermaphrodite and male flowers on the other (tridiosis). The flowers stand alone or in pairs in leaf axils, sometimes at the tips of branches pushed into spike-like pseudo - inflorescences. The perianth is five-lobed with or without a tube. The five stamens are opposite the perianthlobes. The ovary is round and has a style with a two- or three-lobed stigma.

The fruit is the utriculus characteristic of the goosefoot family, which is enveloped by the enlarged perianth. This forms wings that arise at the base of the perianthlobes.
