The Neuffener Hörnle-Jusenberg area is a nature reserve (NSG number 1.226) designated by ordinance of the Stuttgart Regional Council of November 21, 1997 in the area of the municipality of Neuffen in the Baden-Württemberg district of Esslingen . The nature reserve lies entirely in the Swabian Alb biosphere area .

history

In 1902, the Nürtingen am Hörnle cement works began mining limestone and marl . As can be seen from an information board on the Hörnle, a dispute broke out in the 1950s about further dismantling. It was about the complete dismantling of the Hörnles and thus the breakthrough of the ridge into the Ermstal. The cement works finally received a mining permit that was limited to 1974 and was limited to the northern part of the Hörnles. At the end of the 1970s, work began on recultivating the site. In order to optically subdivide the up to 130-meter-high rock face, trees were planted on the four berms . The quarry floor received an irregular covering with raw soil. After the whole area was fenced in, the area has been developing since 1980 with almost no human influence. The resulting habitats for plants and animals range from extremely dry locations in the rock face to small pools in the quarry floor.

Location and purpose of protection

The 48.0 hectare (ha) nature reserve is located southwest of Neuffen and northeast of Dettingen an der Erms . It lies on the border of the natural areas 094 Mittleres Kuppenalb and 101 Mittleres Albvorland within the natural spatial main unit 10 - Swabian Keuper-Lias-Land .

The area consists of two parts, the disused quarry and the hillside forest on the Jusenberg that adjoins Jusi . A special feature on the ridge on the Jusenberg is the dry oak forest with crossings of downy oak and grape oak and blue-red stone seeds in the herb layer. The main protection purpose is the preservation of the diverse, biologically valuable biotope structures as habitats for endangered animals and plants as well as the preservation of the structured forest areas with their typical layers of bushes and herbs. In addition, the quarry wall of the former quarry is to be preserved as a geological outcrop in the Upper Jura ( White Jura ). The rocks consist of a striking alternation of light, firmer limestones and darker marls. Impressam, well-layered limestone, Lacunosam and lower rock limestone (White Jurassic α, β, γ, δ) emerge. Natural succession is tolerated on smaller areas for reasons of species protection.

The bird world is rich in species, over 100 bird species occur here, including tree falcon, sparrowhawk, wheatear, peregrine falcon, eagle owl and common raven. The pools are a paradise for amphibians, for the specially protected yellow-bellied toad, but also for newts, common frogs and common toads. There are also habitats for reptiles, butterflies, dragonflies, wild bees and beetles.
