The Middle Kuppenalb is a natural area of the Swabian Alb in the south-west of Germany's stepland .

Geological relief of the uppermost rock formations, including the northern Alb foreland, cliff line and edge of the southern Molasse basin

It is a plateau that is clearly delimited to the south due to a step from the Middle Alb . The main part of the Mittlerer Kuppenalb is formed by unbanked mass limestone , which is characterized by deep karstification and a typical dry valley system on the surface. Above-ground drainage takes place in the direction of the Danube through deeply cut valleys ( Lauchert and Große Lauter ) with karst springs and limestone terraces.

There are mainly clayey loam soils, but less loess blankets . Most of the soils are shallow, better soils are only found in the area of the zeta overburden of the Weißjura (Münsinger bowl). In the steeper terrain, limestone formed shallow rendzines , in loess-containing layers parabrown earths and in hollows terra fusca (lime-brown loam ). The forests of the landscape are mainly located on the steep slopes and in the hilltops, the landscape is characterized by the small-scale alternation of wooded areas and open land areas interspersed with woodlands.

In geology, the central, high-lying part of the Swabian Alb, which lies north of the cliff line , which almost follows the Danube valley, is called Kuppenalb . To the northwest, the Kuppenalb borders along a 50-80 meter high level of terrain on the strata Alb , to the south and south-east on the lower Middle Alb . In contrast to the area Alb in the Miocene, this part of the Swabian Alb was not covered by the upper Molasse Sea, which is why the original landscape forms have been preserved here. Geologically it is (according to Dongus 1972) a karstified table hull in the mass and stratified limestone of the upper Malm . The morphologically hard reef limestone form the peaks , while the layer limestone of the Kimmeridgium (middle level of the Upper Jurassic) lying between them has largely been cleared. In the middle area, the Kuppenalb, in contrast to the stratified layered alb adjacent to the northwest, also has unbanked limestones built by sponges.
