The Kugelberg is a nature reserve in the area of the city of Pfullingen in the district of Reutlingen , which was declared by the Tübingen regional council on October 12, 1987 . The nature reserve lies entirely in the Swabian Alb biosphere area and is part of the Albtrauf Pfullingen FFH area and the Middle Swabian Alb bird sanctuary .

location

The Kugelberg nature reserve is located on the south-western slope of the Urselberg between Pfullingen and Lichtenstein -Unterhausen. The area lies in the natural areas of the Middle Alb foreland and the Middle Kuppenalb .

Protection purpose

According to the ordinance, the protection purpose is “the preservation of a natural and scenic southwest slope with meadows, dry grass, groups of bushes, slope water outlets with ponds, natural forest areas, rock formations and scree slopes as a habitat for many endangered and protected plants, especially orchids and animals.”

Landscape character

The area is characterized by a large number of different biotopes and structures. The Kugelberg itself is located in the south of the area and is a volcanic embryo of the Swabian volcano . Here the area is characterized by beech steppe heather forests. It is followed by a semi-arid grassland interspersed with spring outlets.

Flora and fauna

The notable plant species in the area include the stately orchid ( Orchis mascula ), the Turkish lily ( Lilium martagon ) and the blue lettuce ( Lactuca perennis ). There are also 15 species of orchids and four types of gentians in the area.

The fauna is also very diverse. Smooth snakes and grass snakes occur side by side here . Among the numerous proven insect species of Ahlen runners are Bembidion inustum , the variable furniture beetle (Grynobius planus) of Rosenkäfer Cetonie aurata , the head Horn Schröter (Sinodendron cylindricum) , the Red-necked salpingidae (Rhinosimus ruficollis) , the Scarab Beetle Amphimallon atrum , Hymenoptera Megalodontos klugi , the sawfly Rhogogaster picta , the golden wasp Chrysis pustulosa , the bee species Osmia xanthomelaena , Hylaeus lineolatus , Nomada lepeletieri and Osmia rufohirta , the scorpion fly Panorpa cognata , the common sickle hoppers (Phaneroptera falcata) and the red-winged snares (Psophus falcata) .
