The Sulzeichene is an approximately 450-year-old, imposing pedunculate oak ( Quercus robur ) in the Neckar-Alb region . It stands as a natural monument in the area of Walddorfhäslach on the northern edge of the Reutlingen district in Baden-Württemberg .

Geographical location

The Sulzeiche grows in the eastern part of the Schönbuch nature park around 1.3 km north-northwest of the center of Walddorf , the western part of Walddorfhäslach. It is located on the eastern part of the elongated ridge of the Schaichberg ( 456  m above sea  level ) at an altitude of about 440  m . The forest edge of the Schaichtal lies directly to the north .

Nature reserve

The tree stands on the eastern edge of the approximately 1.9 hectare " Sulzeiche nature reserve ", which was founded on November 16, 1981 and is located at around 445 to 455  m above sea level. NN lies. The federal road 27 leads about 300 m southeast of the tree. The protection purpose is the typical, in a wide area unique forest fringe biotope with open ground areas and grasslands as a habitat for a species-rich insect fauna. A specialty of the local insect fauna is the digger wasp Didineis lunicornis , which is rarely found in Central Europe .

description

The mighty trunk of the Sulzeiche has a circumference of 6.35 m. The tree veteran's crown is extraordinarily multi-branched and spans more than 25 m with its largest diameter. A long time ago a strong main branch broke out on the back. The subsequently penetrating moisture has meanwhile led to strong fungus growth and decomposition of the sapwood. Nevertheless, the Sulzeiche is still in comparatively good condition.

history

The theologian Friedrich Christoph Oetinger (1702–1782), a pietist and mystic who was pastor in Walddorf from 1746 to 1752, is said to have prayed at this oak tree and “preached to the spirits”. The Protestant theologian Otto Michel , the founder of the Tübingen Institutum Judaicum , who himself occasionally came to the oak to seek closeness to God, described the place at the oak as “a place where heaven and earth meet”.
