The Schandental is a nature reserve designated by the Tübingen regional council on February 4, 1998 by ordinance in the area of the municipality of Mehrstetten in the district of Reutlingen . It is part of the FFH area Tiefental and Schmiechtal and the bird sanctuary of the Valleys of the Middle Jura .
location
The Schandental nature reserve is located about 1.7 kilometers south of the village of Mehrstetten in the Middle Area Alb natural area and in the geological unit of the Middle Upper Jura .
Protection purpose
According to the Protected Area Ordinance, the protection purpose is "the maintenance, care and improvement of a dry valley that is characteristic of the Middle Alb, including its south-facing slopes with various types of juniper heaths, the forest areas, the hedgerow and field trees and the meadows and arable land that predominantly determines the valley floor, the preservation, Maintenance and improvement of this biotope mosaic and in particular the semi-arid grassland as a habitat for numerous endangered plant and animal species, the maintenance and improvement of a biotope network of the semi-arid grassland individually located in the area, the preservation of the landscape-defining beauty and uniqueness of the valley due to the richly structured biotope mosaic, in particular keeping it open of the valley floor "as well as" the safeguarding and improvement of a large-scale biotope network of juniper heaths in the district of Mehrstetten ".
Landscape character
The dry valley has dug itself into the Alb plateau into the layers of the Middle Upper Jurassic. It runs in a west-east direction from Mehrstetten train station towards Sondernach . However, the nature reserve ends about halfway. The south-facing valley slopes are characterized by juniper heather, but on the upper slope they are forested. The valley floor is determined by meadows. The Swabian Alb Railway runs through the valley .
Flora and fauna
The oil beetle Meloe rugosus , the black apollo and the late summer cube-headed butterfly are found in the area.
