The FFH area Tiefental and Schmiechtal is a protected area (protected area identifier DE-7426-341) in the German state of Baden-Wuerttemberg registered in 2005 by the Tübingen regional council according to Directive 92/43 / EEC (Fauna-Flora-Habitat Directive) . With the ordinance of the regional council of Tübingen on the definition of areas of community importance of November 5, 2018, the area was determined.

location

The 3,304.49 hectare FFH area belongs to the natural areas 096- Mittlere Kuppenalb and 097- Mittlere areaalb within the natural spatial main unit 09 - Swabian Alb . It is located in the Schmiech valley between Mehrstetten and Ehingen on the Danube and in the Tiefental between Heroldstatt and Blaubeuren and on the adjacent plateaus of the Swabian Alb.

Description and purpose of protection

It is a valley landscape full of contrasts. The Schmiecher See, hedge areas, rocky, dry and semi-arid grasslands with a remarkable occurrence of orchids (2% priority) and Pulsatilla vulgaris, remains of floodplain meadows and steppe heather forest. There are 76 caves in the area.

Contiguous protected areas

The FFH area consists of 14 sub-areas. In large parts it overlaps with several landscape protection areas . The bird sanctuary 7624-441 valleys of the Middle Alb and the Swabian Alb biosphere area each have around 50 percent shares in the FFH area.
