It is almost completely enclosed by the 4398 hectare protected landscape area No. 4.25.121 Schelklingen and is also part of the FFH area No. 7623-341 Tiefental and Schmiechtal , which is 3304 hectares in size. The Upper Schmiechtal lies in the natural area 094 - Middle Kuppenalb within the natural spatial main unit 09 - Swabian Alb.

Protection purpose

According to the Protected Area Ordinance, the main protection purpose is the preservation and care of three juniper heaths, which characterize the landscape, with their fauna and flora biodiversity. These landscape elements typical of the Swabian Alb, along with the species-rich forest communities on the upper slopes that directly adjoin the heaths, the “Bärental” forest gorge and the rocks and caves must be preserved. The vegetation and fauna of the wetland "Talwiesen am Schwarzen Weiher" are also to be preserved.

The purpose of protection is in particular:

  • the preservation of a cultural landscape that has been influenced by cultivation for centuries and the safeguarding of habitats, some of which are of European importance;
  • the preservation and promotion of important plant, butterfly and bird biotopes in the juniper heaths and in the typical limestone beech forests of dry, warm and fresh locations in the Swabian Alb;
  • securing a species-rich clover forest flora in the maple-ash (ravine) forest of the »Bärental« and a species-rich wetland in the valley floodplain;
  • the preservation of the landscape-defining character of the juniper heaths, which are a testimony to the earlier management methods of high cultural value, through maintenance measures and the promotion of sheep grazing in traditional herding for succession control as part of a supra-local network with other pasture areas;
  • the preservation of the geomorphologically remarkable steep slopes, rock heads and caves;
  • the preservation of the area as an integral part of a biotope network and landscape development, and thus also to secure valuable recreational areas.
