The Blue Quarry is a nature reserve on the western outskirts of Ehingen in the Alb-Danube district in Baden-Württemberg . It emerged from an abandoned quarry. The nature reserve has the protected area number 4.086 and the geotope ID NSG8425056.

history

From 1890 to 1925 the quarry on the Saurücken was exploited by the Ehingen cement factory because of its high lime content. At that time the company was the largest cement factory and when it was completed it was the most modern of its kind in the Kingdom of Württemberg . After that, the site remained unused for decades. In 1966 there were plans to use it as an open rubbish dump, but these failed for reasons of water law and considerable resistance from the population. Part of the site was later filled with excavated earth. The ecological importance of the blue quarry was later recognized and in 1980 the regional council in Tübingen declared the unfilled areas of 5.2 hectares, of which the water areas account for around 1.0 hectares, as a nature reserve.

The name Blue Quarry comes from the blue color of the water in the quarry, which is caused by the fact that cement marl was mined at the time and the water has a high proportion of clay.
