The FFH area Glastal, Großer Buchwald and Tautschbuch (protected area identifier DE-7722-311) was created in 2015 by merging the two existing FFH areas Zwiefaltener Alb and Großer Buchwald and Tautschbuch in the German state of Baden-Württemberg . These former areas were registered in 2005 by the Tübingen regional council in accordance with Directive 92/43 / EEC (Fauna-Flora-Habitat Directive) . With the ordinance of the regional council of Tübingen on the definition of areas of community importance of November 5, 2018, the area was determined.

The 3583.1 hectare FFH area belongs to the natural areas 040- Danube-Ablach-Platten and 097- Mittlere areasalb within the natural spatial main units 04- Danube-Iller-Lech-Platte and 09- Swabian Alb . It lies between Hayingen and Langenenslingen.

Description and purpose of protection

It is a hilly low mountain range with predominant exposure to the west to south-east. In the eastern part the glass valley with rocks, juniper heaths and forest formations. In the western part on the southern edge of the Swabian Alb, large beech forests with small juniper heaths and limestone grasslands. There are 37 caves in the area.

Contiguous protected areas

The FFH area consists of 10 sub-areas. It intersects with several landscape protection areas . The bird sanctuary 7624-441 valleys of the Middle Alb has around 20 percent shares in the FFH area. In addition, 22 percent of it is in the Swabian Alb biosphere area .
