The Denkendorf Tunnel is a railway tunnel that is being built as part of the Stuttgart 21 project as part of the new Stuttgart – Wendlingen line . The building is being erected in the area of the Baden-Württemberg community of Denkendorf and bears her name.

The tunnel was completed in December 2019.

Location and course

The structure lies between the construction kilometers 19.329 and 20.097. In the structure, the new line in the area of the Denkendorf tank and service station crosses under federal motorway 8 in a south-easterly direction.

The structure should accommodate two tracks with a track center distance of 4.50 m, which should be passable at 250 km / h.

A pre-cut is to be placed in front of the east portal. From km 20.4 the route turns into a dam up to 9 m high.

Elevation

The longitudinal profile ( gradient ) is trough-shaped. The lowest point of the tunnel is in km 20.014, 83 m from the east portal. Due to the small gap between the gantries, Deutsche Bahn applied for the tub profile to be implemented without additional security measures.

cross-section

The cross-section should have a clear width of 11.70 m and a clear height of 7.00 m.

history

planning

In the route introduced into the regional planning procedure on December 6, 1996, a 785 m long tunnel was planned south of Denkendorf to cross under the motorway in a south-easterly direction.

In the course of the planning, the position of the tunnel was shifted about 300 m to the west in order to bypass a water protection area (Zone II).

Tendering and awarding

The construction of the structure was put out to tender across Europe in mid-September 2013. The construction contract to be awarded should run from March 1, 2014 to December 31, 2016. Preparatory measures should start in January 2014, the main work in September 2014 (status: October 2013). The award procedure was extended to June 2014. According to the railway, the construction contract was awarded at the end of June 2014 for almost 40 million euros. Commissioned the working group Tunnel Denkendorf , which is formed from the companies Johann Bunte ( Bad Bentheim ) and Heitkamp Ingenieur- und Kraftwerkbau ( Herne ). Six bidders submitted bids in the award procedure. The notification of the award of the contract, valued at 38.830 million euros, to ARGE Tunnel Denkendorf was formally announced on July 23, 2014.

In 2015 the company Grundbau Bohrtechnik Spezialtiefbau GmbH & Co. KG received the order for the construction of over 14,000 m² of back-anchored girder pile walls worth 3.0 million euros.

construction

Clearance of the construction site for the Denkendorf tunnel parallel to federal motorway 8 in June 2015.

Construction work began in August 2015 and completion was scheduled for the end of March 2018. At the beginning of 2016, completion was also planned for 2018.

The structure was built using the open construction method. A 144-meter-long trough structure is to be added to the west of the tunnel. It should be founded flat on a sandstone layer and lie continuously above the groundwater . 46,000 cubic meters of concrete were to be used to build the tunnel. In the end it was 35,000 m³ of concrete and 4,600 t of steel. Of the 250,000 cubic meters of excavated material, 130,000 were to be disposed of by truck. Of this, 60 percent should be removed via the tank and rest area and the motorway, 40 percent via the L 1204.

The A 8 was laid in sections in seven phases. Initially, all six lanes used the lane in the direction of Munich, then all traffic was to be relocated to the north side of the autobahn, whereby part of the fuel and rest area was also to be used. At the end of August 2015, the relocation of the A8 carriageway in the direction of Stuttgart began. The opposite lane should follow later. The relocation was planned for spring 2018. In December 2017, the lanes were relocated to an already completed part of the tunnel to make room for further tunnel construction. This second construction phase of the tunnel ran from the beginning of 2018 to the end of 2019.

Around half of the trough was excavated in January 2016. In February 2016, the excavation and shoring of the almost 200-meter-long retaining wall west was completed. On September 13, 2016, the concrete work on the trough wall to the motorway began.

In November 2019, the motorway lane in the direction of Stuttgart was relocated to its original location. On the night of December 16-17, 2019, the motorway lane in the direction of Munich will be moved back to its original position.

Around 100 to 150 people were employed on the construction site during the construction period.

The track construction is to take place from September 2021.

The cost of the structure was put at "around 40 million euros" at the end of 2019. According to the Deutsche Bahn, the structure was built within budget.

Incidents

On January 3, 2018, a truck driving towards Munich crashed into the excavation of the tunnel. The driver was seriously injured and there was property damage amounting to 110,000 euros. Excessive speed is assumed to be the cause of the accident. At the time of the accident, no construction workers were employed on the construction site.

No employees were injured during the construction phase.

security concept

The tube is to receive tunnel safety lighting. An escape route at least 1.20 m wide is provided on the side. A rescue area of approx. 1,500 m² with a connection to state road 1204 is to be built at the east portal . A dry pipe with an extinguishing water tank is also to be set up.

Due to the length, there is no emergency exit.
