Old Mission in Suurbraak
|
The small town of Suurbraak (also Zuurbraak ) is located around 20 kilometers east of Swellendam and west of Heidelberg in the municipality of Swellendam , Overberg district , Western Cape Province in South Africa , 220 meters above sea level at the foot of the Langeberg Mountains . In 2011, Suurbraak had 2,252 inhabitants.
A mission station of the London Mission Society was founded here in 1812 - part of the former mission can be visited after a restoration that has been carried out in the meantime. The missionaries wanted primarily to train the Khoikhoi and convert them to the Christian faith. In 1837 a church was built, but around 1870 the missionaries left the place. The church has been part of the Dutch Reformed Church in South Africa since 1876 .
