The Autmut is a twelve kilometer long stream in the Esslingen district and, for a short time, on the edge of the Reutlingen district in Baden-Württemberg . It rises in the foothills of the Alb in front of the western foot of the Jusi and flows from the right into the upper Neckar opposite the village of Neckarhausen in the city of Nürtingen after a total of about north .

Surname

In the dialect the Bach name (with a definite article and elision from its final vowel) is pronounced as [ ˈd'aotmət ]. The name is recorded in the 11th century in the forms "Otimot" and "Ottmuot", in the 17th century as "Ottnach". The older two forms are elliptical modifications of an original noun compound Ōtmuot-aha , which is formed from the very common Old High German basic word -aha 'flowing waters' (compare -ach ) and the Old High German defining word ōdmuot 'Demut, Gnade, Milde' - the corresponding Middle High German Form is ōtmuote  - and has subsequently lost the basic word. The initial long vowel ō in the elliptical Ōtmuot changed to ao via diphthongization . The motif of the naming could have been a noticeably low water level in the water.

View from the west over the Muldes der Autmut to Großbettlingen

The source of the Autmut is at the eastern foot of the Floriansberg ( 522.4  m above sea level ) and less than a kilometer west of the Jusi beyond the village of Kappishäuser in the small town of Neuffen at about 450  m above sea level. NHN . The Autmut rises next to the sports fields in the forest ledge in the Gewann Grundtobel and after a 300 meter run through the blade of the Gewann it reaches the open corridor a little southwest of Kohlberg , where it crosses the municipal boundary between Neuffen and Kohlberg.

Strengthened by short watercourses from the direction of Kohlberg, including the Treuschachbach after the bridge of the L 1260 Grafenberg- Kohlberg, and those from the forest ridge of the Kuhnhalde on the left and from the Autmutwald, it flows accompanied by deciduous trees with moderate changes in direction approximately northwards through orchards.

North-west of Kohlberg it runs between the continuation of the book of the left mountain ridge and the beech forest on the right slope in a narrow floodplain northwards and is at the sports fields of the village of Tischardt in the municipality of Frickenhausen from the Buch forest at about 350  m above sea level. NHN amplified by the brook from the Kappistöbele. It marks the border of the districts of Esslingen and Reutlingen for almost a kilometer , runs past Tischardt on the right slope and turns under the K 6713/1239 from the main road to Tischardt between the northern tip of the Buch and the Kirchert hill forest northwest through the Heiligenwiesen, in which it is crossed by the B 313 .

The valley is now wider and the forest recedes further from the run. From the left the Lautenbach and the Reutenbach flow, from the right a brook from the Kirchert and the short Baumbach into the Autmut, the Baumbach already a little south of Großbettlingen on the right slope, under which the Autmut continues to pass in a north-westerly direction. A little west of the village, the K 1231 Bempflingen –Großbettlingen crosses the now somewhat narrower valley. Before the Autmut flows through the embankment of the Neckar-Alb Railway , the Talbach flows from the right at Staufenbühl, shortly afterwards the Nettelbach from the south and the longest left tributary Schlegelbach at the next road bridge from the southwest.

From there, the Autmut turns in a long arc to the right, up to the mouth accompanied by the railway line on the right slope, above which the Raidwangen district of Nürtingen stands. Below the Liebenau castle ruins on the left spur of the valley, the stream enters the Neckartalmulde, crosses under the K 1229 from Neckartailfingen and then runs east-northeast in less than half a kilometer from the Neckar. He passes Neckartailfingen train station on the lower slope on the right and the Beutwangsee quarry lake directly on the left bank.

Then the Autmut passes a small part of Neckarhausen settlement on this side of the Neckar. This is where its 2.4 km longest tributary, Schlierbach, comes from the south. It crosses under the L 1230 Raidwangen – Neckarhausen and then flows directly below the river weir at 273.7  m above sea level. NHN across from Neckarhausen from the right and finally from the southwest into the upper Neckar .

After a 11.9 km long run, the Autmut flows with a mean bottom gradient of about 15 ‰, about 176 meters below its origin.

Today the Autmut lower reaches in the right Neckaraue Beutwang is a straight ditch. At the end of the 19th century, the water ran through this lowland in small arches and flowed into the Neckar about 300 meters before the current mouth and above the current weir. The mouth section at today's sports ground was a wedge up to the width of the Neckar. From the west and near the banks of the Neckar, a narrow thread of water flowed towards it. The current course of the estuary is already drawn on a map from this time as a narrow water line not connected to the Autmut. They and the mouth wedge at that time were probably remnants of old loops abandoned by the Neckar.

Catchment area

The Autmut drains an area of 19.5 km². In terms of natural space, it is predominantly in the foreland of the central Swabian Alb , the upper part in its lower area Neuffen-Vorberge , the lower in the lower area Erms-Steinach-Albvorland . The part near the mouth is part of the Nürtinger-Esslinger Neckar valley sub - area of the Filder natural area .

By far the highest point is 672.8  m above sea level. NHN high peaks of the Albsporn Jusi at its southeastern tip, where the catchment areas of the neighboring rivers Erms in the south and southwest and Steinlach in the east border each other. Both are also right tributaries of the upper Neckar before and after the Autmut estuary. The Erms in particular has numerous tributaries from the Autmut watershed. Only far to the north are small catchment areas of closer Neckar tributaries between them.

Especially in the upper catchment area, there is forest on the watersheds, partly down to the watercourse. The municipalities in the catchment area from the origin to the estuary are the city of Neuffen with the district mark of Kappishäuser , the municipality of Kohlberg , the municipality of Grafenberg to the left of the water, the municipality of Frickenhausen with the district of Tischardt to the right of the water, the municipality of Großbettlingen with the right parts of the settlement, the Bempflingen municipality on the left of the run without settlement in the catchment area, the Altdorf municipality on the left of the run, the Raidwangen district of Nürtingen on the right, the Neckartailfingen on the left of the run without settlement in the catchment area, near the mouth of the small district of the Neckarhausen district of Nürtingen, in the building stand directly on the bank and a gusset of the central district marking of Nürtingen on the right hill with almost only commercial development.

geology

In the catchment area of the Autmut there are Mesozoic rock layers from the White Jura down to the uppermost Mittelkeuper . The highest formation is the Impressamergel formation of the White Jura on part of the largely volcanic Jusiberg Alb foothills, under which the Braunjura begins with the Ornatenton formation . A few formations deeper, the river rises in the Achdorf formation and changes west of Kohlberg, around the mouth of the Treuschachbach, into the Opalinus Clay Formation , the lowest Braunjura formation with the largest area in the catchment area, from which it flows into the Black Jura in the Heiligenwiesen area changes. Of the directly adjacent layers, the Obtususton formation around Raidwangen and on the opposite slope around the Schlegelbach has the largest area. Large areas below the Braunjura border are, however, covered with loess sediment from Quaternary deposits. Below the Arietenkalk formation on the slope under the Obtususton , from the beginning of the lower right curve of the Autmut, there are extensive landslides on the right of the lower course, while on the left side floodplains occupy the wide Neckar valley floor. The river reaches the tuberous marl ( Trossingen formation ), the uppermost layer of the Mittelkeuper , shortly before the inlet of the Schlierbach, which runs right of the course of the Autmut up to its mouth.

The Autmut runs through the area of the Swabian volcano , which was active in the Miocene and whose largest volcanic vent was the Jusiberg at the southeast corner of the catchment area. In other places, smaller chimneys have left behind volcanic hardships, for example the Grafenberg near the village of the same name, other ascent chimneys did not reach the surface of the earth at that time, but can be detected geomagnetically or seen in the landscape as small isolated elevations ("volcanic embryo"), see also the relevant Natural monuments under →  Nature and Protected Areas .

Two parallel fault lines cross the upper valley in a north-westerly direction from Jusiberg towards Grafenberg. At the Braun- / Schwarzjura border at the end of the Heiligenwiesen another crosses the valley from northeast to southwest; near the Reutenbach, a disturbance follows the course of the valley in front of the left watershed and ends at Schlegelbach. Another disturbance moves from Altdorf in the direction of Raidwangen over the Autmut valley and behind it over the Schlierbach valley. Two convergent faults approach this in the Autmuttal, from the aforementioned one on the left edge of the valley and from the northern settlement area of Großbettlingen.

Nature and protected areas

Up to its turn to the northeast below Raidwangen, the Autmut is classified as a coarse material-rich , then as a fine-material, carbonate low mountain range . A wood gallery, which is seldom exposed, accompanies the Autmut until it enters the Neckaraue.

Large parts of the catchment area are located in various landscape protection areas . On the Jusiberg it is part of the Jusi - Auf dem Berg nature reserve set up on its higher parts and the Jusiberg forest reserve.

A number of natural monuments are located in the catchment area. In addition to individual trees and wetlands along the Autmut and tributaries, they also include field hedges, a group of oaks and a border hedge in the Kirchert forest, in the estuary area, among other things, a gravel island and other natural monuments with geological relevance: the abandoned quarry (cement kiln) above the tree stream near Großbettlingen, the Volcanic embryo Geigersbühl with 3 linden trees on the eastern edge of Großbettlingen, the volcanic embryo Staufenbühl northwest of Großbettlingen and the volcanic embryo Kräuterbühl on the southwest edge of Raidwangen. These and an abandoned quarry on the southwestern edge of Kohlberg in the nature reserve are designated as geotopes.
