location

According to the structure of the manual of the natural spatial structure of Germany by Meynen / Schmithüsen (1953–1962) and the refinements of the single sheet no. 170 Stuttgart , the natural area begins at Neckartenzlingen and extends to below Esslingen. The following cities and communities in the Esslingen district are located in the Nürtinger-Esslinger Neckar Valley natural area:

geography

After Nürtingen, the Neckar valley widens in the marl . Even below the Neckar knee of Plochingen, due to the increase in the amount of water due to the confluence of the Fils , it retains its width and thus the character of an independent space in the parlor sandstone . At Plochingen, the parlor sandstone emerges from the valley floor and forms the steeper, lower slope areas with fresh, sandy-loamy soils. Because of their favorable physical properties, they turn out to be preferred vineyards, especially those facing south.

Climatically, the valley still belongs to the fringes of the Neckar basin . It is a bit warmer and less rainfall than the Filder plateau and the Alb foreland. In the valley floor, which is up to 1.5 kilometers wide and between 270 and 240 meters high, there are pebbles made of white Jurassic limestone, as well as Keuper and Brown Jurassic sandstones. Coarser and finer sandy layers alternate. Pure floodplain are common, their base usually consists of permeable gravel. The edge strips of the valley floor with a low groundwater level (1–2 meters below the valley floor) carry arable land and garden land, as do individual higher terraces. The natural vegetation today is limited to a strip near the shore. The large-scale quarry ponds that arose with the development of the building industry have consumed a lot of cultivated land. What is striking is the close spatial connection between industry and specialized fruit, garden and wine crops.
