Prehistory and Antiquity

Finds show that the Zipfelbachtal was inhabited in the Neolithic Age (4000 to 1800 BC). The Celts who lived here during the late Bronze Age (1800 BC) or early Iron Age (600 BC) were conquered by the Romans at the beginning of our era . The Römerstraße, now known as the Römerweg , which leads from Schwaikheim to Affalterbach, can still be followed quite well today. Around the year 260, Germanic tribes ousted the Romans. The tribal border of the Franks and Alemanni later ran near Schwaikheim.

Middle Ages and early modern times

In the year 853 Sueinincheim was mentioned for the first time in the document book of the imperial monastery Lorsch on Bergstrasse. At an unknown time, the Counts of Württemberg bought the place from the Lords of Ebersberg. When the country was divided, Schwaikheim belonged to the Waiblingen office and from 1463 to the Winnenden office. Numerous people were killed by the plague during the Thirty Years' War . As a result of the French invasions, Schwaikheim was set on fire on July 29, 1693.

From the royal times to the present

When the new administrative structure was implemented in the Kingdom of Württemberg , which was founded in 1806 , Schwaikheim was assigned to the Waiblingen Oberamt in 1808 , which was renamed the Waiblingen district in 1934 .

With the first section of the Murrbahn between Waiblingen and Backnang, which opened in 1876 , Schwaikheim was connected to the Württemberg railway network . Schwaikheim changed from an agricultural village community into an industrial and workers' community.

During the administrative reform in Württemberg during the Nazi era , Schwaikheim came to the Waiblingen district in 1938 .

After the Second World War, the place became part of the American zone of occupation in 1945 and thus belonged to the newly founded state of Württemberg-Baden , which was incorporated into the current state of Baden-Württemberg in 1952.

In 1973 there was the district reform in Baden-Württemberg , when Schwaikheim became part of the Rems-Murr district .

Today Schwaikheim is a modern community with efficient trade, craft and industrial companies.

Ortneckname

The local name Schwaikheim is "Schlappohra" and comes from the Thirty Years' War . The story goes that Swedish troops wanted to loot Schwaikheim and the Schwaikheimers turned their trouser pockets out as a sign of their poverty and thus faced the Swedish troops. Since it looked like floppy ears (Swabian: Schlappohra), the Schwaikheimers in the surrounding area kept this name.

coat of arms

The Schwaikheim coat of arms shows a golden, straight official staff on a red shield, which is crossed diagonally with a golden abbot's staff that ends in a curve. The official staff can be seen here as a sign of the old membership of the Württemberg secular offices of Winnenden and Waiblingen, whose bailiffs once held the staff over Schwaikheim, i.e. carried out justice. The abbot points to Schwaikheim's historical relationships with various religious institutions, especially with Backnang Abbey .
