Early history

Documentary mention was Leutenbach as Lutenbach first time in 1284, Nellmersbach ( Nitmaresbach ) in 1071 and Weiler zum Stein ( Wyler ) 1245. A charter of Rudolf von Neuffen from 1295 in which a Heinrich von Lutenbach as bailiff in Güglingen is mentioned applies as the first evidence of a nobleman "von Leutenbach".

The first traces of settlement (e.g. burial mounds and tools) on the area around today's community date from the Copper Age and in particular the Early Iron Age . In the period between 750 and 450 BC BC probably Celts and Skyten settled in what is now the municipality. Menschenbach is about 15 km west of the Upper German-Raetian Limes , i.e. still within the Roman occupation area. The occupation began here in 155 AD and lasted about 100 years. Traces of this can also be found, including the remains of two villae rusticae .

In the Middle Ages, Leutenbach and Nellmersbach belonged to the Winnenden dominion, Weiler zum Stein belonged to Wolfsölden Castle (today a suburb of Affalterbach). In 1322, Count Eberhard the Illustrious bought the castle and assigned it to the Marbach office . Weiler zum Stein migrated with it. Leutenbach and Nellmersbach, in turn, were three years later by Eberhard's son, Count Ulrich III. von Württemberg , acquired and added to the Winnenden office. This also explains why Leutenbach and Nellmersbach later belonged to the Waiblingen district , but Weiler zum Stein belonged to the Backnang district (the Marbach district was dissolved in 1938 and Weiler zum Stein was assigned to the Backnang district).

The Thirty Years' War did not stop at the Leutenbacher communities and brought great misery , especially after the lost battle near Nördlingen from 1634 onwards. During the War of the Palatinate Succession , Nellmersbach was completely burned down in 1693, like so many other places in southwest Germany, by the troops of the French general Mélac .

19th and 20th centuries

On January 1, 1806, the Kingdom of Württemberg came into being . Leutenbach and Nellmersbach were in 1808 in the wake of the new administrative structure of the upper office Waiblingen assigned Weiler zum Stein, however, remained as before the Oberamt Marbach assumed.

With the completion of the Murrtalbahn from Waiblingen to Backnang in 1876, Nellmersbach got a connection to the route network of the Württembergische Eisenbahn and thus experienced a great economic revival. Even today, Nellmersbach is the only residential district in the entire municipality with a notable industrial settlement.

The administrative reform during the Nazi era in Württemberg led in 1938 for Leutenbach and Nellmersbach to belong to the district of Waiblingen , but Weiler zum Stein became part of the district of Backnang .

In 1945 the three municipalities became part of the American zone of occupation and thus belonged to the newly founded state of Württemberg-Baden , which became part of the current state of Baden-Württemberg in 1952.

As a result of the district reform , the three communities came to the Rems-Murr district on January 1, 1973.

The current community of Leutenbach was formed on January 1, 1975 as part of the regional reform in Baden-Württemberg from the three neighboring communities of Leutenbach, Nellmersbach and Weiler zum Stein. The administrative seat is Leutenbach, which also gave the entire municipality its name.
