The metropolitan region of Rhineland comprises 22 regional authorities and the city region of Aachen in the administrative districts of Düsseldorf and Cologne in North Rhine-Westphalia . The association of the same name defined this area. The goals of the association are "to make the Rhineland as a metropolitan region of European importance in national, European and global competition even more successful, to make the Rhineland even more attractive as a residential and business location and to strengthen its perception as a region internally and externally."

The association Metropolregion Rheinland e. V. was founded on February 20, 2017. The founding members were the highest representatives of the following corporations under public law :

The chairman is Thomas Geisel , Lord Mayor of Düsseldorf.
The association is based in Cologne.
