Wilhelm Maximilian Kisch

Wilhelm Maximilian Kisch (born May 18, 1827 in Vienna ; † August 17, 1893 there ) was an Austrian writer and Viennese local historian.

The qualified lawyer Kisch initially served in the Imperial and Royal Army within the framework of military jurisdiction and became captain-auditor, 1st class in 1863. However, Kisch subsequently devoted himself exclusively to writing, published the Wiener Kunsthefte from 1871 to 1873 and collected proverbs.

His main work, to this day a standard work of Viennensia literature, is The old streets and squares of Vienna and their historically interesting houses (1883). Kisch continued his monumental project with a first volume on the Viennese suburbs (published in 1885), the second volume only appeared in 1895 from Kisch's estate.
