Romantic cemetery in Maria Enzersdorf
The Maria Enzersdorf Cemetery, known as the Romantic Cemetery, is located in Maria Enzersdorf in Lower Austria .
The cemetery was laid out in 1784 on the municipality border with Mödling . At the same time, Maria Enzersdorf also became its own parish. In 1785 , a cemetery chapel was built by Josef von Penkler , who was then the owner of the Liechtenstein estate.
The name Romantikerfriedhof comes from the numerous graves of members of the Viennese Romantic Circle around the canonized Redemptorist Father Clemens Maria Hofbauer , who was also buried here.
In 1868 the cemetery was expanded. Since 1870 there are also burial places of Franciscans of the Franciscan monastery in Maria Enzersdorf.
In 1961 a funeral hall was built. There is also a war memorial for the fallen soldiers of the First World War at the cemetery.
