Hermann (Armin) von Kern (born March 14, 1838 in Liptoujvar (formerly Hungary, today Liptovský Hrádok, Slovakia); †  January 18, 1912 in Maria Enzersdorf in Lower Austria) was an Austrian academic painter.

Life

Hermann von Kern, whose family immigrated to Hungary from Germany, was born as the son of the Hungarian camera doctor Benjamin Kern in Hradek in Upper Hungary. His extraordinary talent was recognized very early on and that is why his father sent him to Theo Böhm in Budapest. He was also with Klemens in Prague. Then he went to Carl Rahl in Vienna (Academy of Fine Arts). In 1867 he was sent to Düsseldorf at the instigation of the then Minister of Culture, Baron Bötvös, who had recognized his outstanding talent . Before 1870 he was there as a scholarship holder of the Hungarian government to complete his studies. He moved from Düsseldorf to Munich and worked there with his friends Defregger and Kaulbach under Piloty . When he returned to Budapest, he worked as a portraitist and genre painter. In 1876 the artist moved with his family (10 children) to Vienna and devoted himself to genre painting. At first he liked the gypsy types, later he specialized in humorous Biedermeier scenes and peasant types. In 1903, at the age of 64, he left Vienna and spent the last years of his life in the country (Maria Enzersdorf), still devoting himself to his artistic work and his family.

His daughter Pauline von Kern , an academic painter (1878–1939), was also a well-known Austrian artist. She mainly painted landscapes (Wienerwald scenes) and portraits.

Peter Július Kern (born January 31, 1881 in Palúdzka, Liptovský Mikuláš (Liptau-Sankt-Nikolaus); † March 25, 1963 ibid) was a Slovak painter and restorer. He was Hermann Armin von Kern's nephew.
