Peter Július Kern

Peter Július Kern (born January 31, 1881 in Palúdzka, Liptovský Mikuláš (Liptov-Sankt-Nikolaus); † March 25, 1963 ibid) was a Slovak painter and restorer . He was the nephew of the Austrian painter Hermann Armin von Kern .

Life

From 1896 to 1901 he studied at the arts and crafts school in Budapest before he went on a study trip to Munich from 1912 to 1913 . He lived in Liptovský Mikuláš . After the establishment of Czechoslovakia, he organized the first exhibition of Slovak artists.

He was considered a painter of early symbolism. His works included landscape painting , portraits , figures and still lifes . He organized solo exhibitions in Bratislava in 1943 and Liptovsky Mikulas in 1957. In addition to painting and restoration, he also devoted himself to the restoration of photographs.

Julius Peter Kern was one of the few professionally trained restorers at the time. Kern specialized in the restoration of monuments, especially from the Baroque era . He participated z. B. in the rescue of works of art in St. Elisabeth's Cathedral in Košice or in the parish church in Levoci .

His pictures are still sold at auctions at home and abroad. Peter Julius Kern is still a well-known painter and restorer in Slovakia (Bratislava) today.

In 2011, a commemoration ceremony was held in Bratislava on his 130th birthday.
