Career
Michael Apelgren had a sporting background: his father Per was a soccer player and coach, his mother Lena a former national handball player. Michael himself started playing handball at IF Swithiod. At the junior age he came to BK Söder. When he was promoted to the top Swedish league a few years later, his team went to the big club Djurgårdens IF , where Apelgren only sat on the bench most of the time. He was then loaned to Djurgården's cooperation partner Tyresö. In 2003 he finally moved to the Stockholm first division club Hammarby IF and made his debut there with the first team in the Swedish elite series. At first he was mediocre in the league with the capitals, it was only under the new coach Staffan Olsson that things finally improved: in 2006 and 2007, his team won the Swedish championship and moved into the EHF Champions League .
In the 2009/10 season Apelgren played for the Spanish first division club BM Granollers . From summer 2010 he ran for the Swedish club IK Sävehof . With Sävehof he won the championship in 2011 and 2012. In the summer of 2013 he moved to the Spanish club BM Puerto Sagunto . After Apelgren took third place in the ASOBAL league's list of goalscorers with 165 goals in the 2013/14 season , he joined the Norwegian club Elverum Håndball , where he initially worked as a player-coach. Since 2016 he has only worked as a coach at Elverum Håndball. Under his leadership, Elverum won the Norwegian Championship in 2015, 2016, 2017, 2018 and 2019 and the Norwegian Cup in 2019. From the 2020/21 season he will coach the Swedish first division club IK Sävehof.
Michael Apelgren played five international matches for the Swedish national team . With the junior team he became junior world champion in 2003.
