EHF Champions League 2002/03

At the EHF Champions League 2002/03 31 took Handball part -Vereinsmannschaften, who had qualified in the previous season in their home leagues for the competition. It was the 43rd edition of the EHF Champions League and the European Cup of National Champions. The defending champion was SC Magdeburg . The cup games began on September 7, 2002, the second final took place on May 4, 2003. In the final, Montpellier HB was able to prevail against Portland San Antonio .

mode

For the group phase there were two qualifying rounds in a knockout system with a return leg for the lower-ranked qualified clubs. The winners from qualifying round 1 went one round and the losers to the second round of the 2002/03 EHF Cup . The winners from qualifying round 2 advanced to the group stage and the losers to the third round of the EHF Cup. In the group stage with four groups of four teams each, each group played a return match against each other. The two best groups in each group reached the quarter-finals. From the quarter-finals onwards, the game was played in a knockout system with a return leg. The winner of the final was the EHF Champions League winner of the 2002/03 season.

qualification

Round 1

The first legs took place on 7./8. September 2002 and the second leg on 14./15. September 2002. Exceptions were the games between MŠK Považská Bystrica and GTU Shevardeni Tbilisi in Považská Bystrica and the games between HK Lokomotiv Warna and Fibrex Săvineşti in Bacău , which were played on September 7th and 8th, 2002.

The first leg in Pamplona took place on April 26, 2003 and the second leg in Montpellier on May 5, 2003. Montpellier HB's first title win was also the first of a French team in the EHF Champions League or the European Cup.
