In groups A and B, the 16 teams classified as particularly powerful played, of which 5 teams per group should reach the second round; the respective group winners should go straight to the quarter-finals.

In groups C and D were the remaining twelve teams and the two winners of the qualification. The two first and second place winners should play the places for the round of 16 in a knockout round.

Round of 16 and quarter finals: Because of the COVID-19 pandemic , the round of 16 and quarter finals were not held. The two group winners in groups A and B went straight to the semi-finals of the Final Four.
