At the European Champion Clubs' Cup in 1977/78 took 24 Handball -Vereinsmannschaften part from 24 countries. They qualified for the European Cup in their home countries in the previous season . At the 18th edition of the competition, SC Magdeburg was the third time a team from the GDR won the cup.
