Petre Ivănescu (born April 15, 1936 in Bucharest ) is a former Romanian handball player and handball coach who was elected coach of the year in 1987 and 1988 .
Ivănescu played during his active time at the Romanian handball club Dinamo Bucharest , with which he won the championship 7 times and the European Cup in 1965 . For the Romanian national team , he completed 89 international matches. With the Romanian selection, he triumphed in 1961 and 1964 at the World Championships. At the 1961 World Cup, Ivănescu was together with Zdeněk Rada (both 24 goals) top scorer. In 1967 he came to Germany, where he was active as a player and coach.
Ivănescu celebrated his greatest successes as a coach at VfL Gummersbach , with whom he won the IHF Cup (1982), the European Cup (1983), the European Championship for club teams (1983) and twice the championships and the DHB- Won trophies (1982, 1983). In February 2002 Ivănescu returned for a few months to the relegation-threatened VfL.
Ivănescu celebrated further successes with TUSEM Essen , which he trained from 1974 to 1976, 1983 to 1986 and 1990 to 1993. Under his leadership, TUSEM won the championship in 1986 and the DHB Cup in 1990 and 1991. He led the clubs SC Phönix Essen (1967 to 1972), TSV Bayer Dormagen (1986 to 1988), TV Niederwürzbach (1988 to 1990) and OSC Rheinhausen (January 1994 to June 1995) all into the Bundesliga . Ivănescu also coached the club teams Brühler TV (1972 to 1974) and TV Oppum (1976 to 1978).
From 1987 to 1989 Ivănescu coached the German men's national handball team , with which he, however, relegated to the C group. In 2003 he took over as coach of the Romanian national team, which he coached until 2005.
