Horst Käsler

Horst Käsler (born April 18, 1926 ; † December 17, 1987 in Berlin ) was a German handball player and trainer and professor of sports didactics .

Käsler had his greatest successes as a player in the 1950s. In 1955 he became world champion with the German national handball team at the field handball world championship (WM) . He was part of the joint selection of the German Handball Federation (DHB) of the FRG and the German Handball Association (DHV) of the GDR at the Indoor Handball World Cup 1954 (2nd place) and the Indoor Handball World Cup 1958 (3rd place).

As the player-coach of Berliner SV 1892 , Käsler won the 1956 German indoor handball championship.

After completing his active sports career, he taught sports didactics at the University of Education in Berlin and headed the 'Seminar for Physical Education', which he developed into one of the leading institutions at universities of teacher education in Germany, where ten professors taught and researched at times. These included u. a. Rolf Andresen , Winfried Joch , Kurt Kohl , Kurt Maidorn and Gertrud Pfister , about his assistants a. a. Arnd Kruger . During this time, various publications on technique, tactics and fitness training in handball were made. He was a founding member of the German Association for Sports Science .

Käsler continued to play high-performance sports. On October 1, 1972, he succeeded Werner Vick as coach of the German national handball team. He held the office until June 30, 1974; he coached the team at the 1974 World Cup (9th place).

In memory of his achievements, a sports hall in Berlin-Schmargendorf was named after him. During his lifetime he had already been honored with the silver bay leaf .
