Irfan Smajlagić ( Cyrillic Ирфан Смајлагић; born October 16, 1961 in Banja Luka , Yugoslavia ) is a Croatian handball coach and former world-class right-winger .
Player career
society
The 1.88 m tall and 85 kg heavy right-winger began his career in the talent factory of RK Borac Banja Luka . Due to the dominance of Metaloplastika Šabac, he did not win the title in this phase.
In the late 1980s, nationalist currents reappeared in Yugoslavia. After nationalist Serbs burned down 16 mosques and one of the two Catholic churches in town, he left his home for Zagreb. With RK Agram Medveščak Zagreb he won the Yugoslav Cup in 1989 and 1990. He then moved to the French league first to US Ivry , then to USAM Nîmes . He then returned to Croatia back to Badel 1862 Zagreb , where he should win the only championship title of his career. After brief stints at RK Zamet and Medveščak, he moved back to Ivry, where he was top scorer again with 174/62 goals in 26 games. After a year together with his nephew Damir (* 1976) at Girondins Bordeaux and relegation the following year with Livry-Gargan Handball, he ended his career.
National team
Smajlagić won the bronze medal with the Yugoslav national team at the 1988 Olympic Games in Seoul. At the World Cup in 1990 , he was only fourth despite his 38 goals.
With the Croatian national team he won bronze at the 1994 European championship , silver at the 1995 world championship and, as the highlight of his career, the gold medal at the 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta. For the Olympic victory he was awarded the Franjo Bučar State Prize for Sport ( Croatian Državna nagrada za šport "Franjo Bučar"). After the European Championship in 2000 he ended his international career. There he was elected to the All-Star Team for the third time after the 1995 World Cup and the 1996 Olympics.
Coaching career
After a brief engagement at RK Čakovec, he became assistant coach of the Croatian national team under Lino Cervar in 2003 , with which he became world champion in 2003 and Olympic champion in 2004 . From 2005 he was national youth coach. Due to the interference of Cervar in his areas, he resigned his office and in 2007 became the national coach of Egypt . He led the North Africans to win the 2008 African Championship and 7th place at the 2009 World Cup . In the summer of 2009 he signed with RK Bosna Sarajevo for three years and was cup winner in 2010 and Bosnian champion in 2010 and 2011. In winter 2011/2012 Smajlagić left the financially badly ailing club. Since 2012 he has been under contract with RK Zamet Rijeka. In March 2014 he signed with the Croatian RK Lokomotiva, where he will train the women's team.
