Caxias is a municipality in the district (Município) of Oeiras with an area of 3.4 km² and 8943 inhabitants (as of June 30, 2011). This results in a population density of 2623 inhabitants per km². The patron of the place is Nossa Senhora das Dores .
The place was raised to Vila (small town) on July 24, 1997 , which was followed by the establishment of the eponymous municipality on June 12, 2001 by splitting off from Paço de Arcos .
During the Estado Novo (dictatorship) in Portugal , the political police PIDE operated the prison of Caxias there , which was stormed on April 27, 1974 during the Carnation Revolution .
