history
Towards the end of the 14th century, the city's palace ( port . : Paço) was built, with two towers and a connecting balcony over the arcades (port .: Arcos) , whereupon the name was transferred to the community. Legend has it that King Manuel I watched from the balcony when Vasco da Gama's fleet set off for India.
The community used to be known for its quarries, which today are an obstacle. The Arco da Rua Augusta (Triumphal Arch) in Lisbon was built from stones from these works.
At the beginning of the last century, Paço de Arcos was still a small village and served as a passage between Lisbon and Cascais . Only with the construction of Avenida Maginal did the town get better traffic access . In the course of the 1960s the population grew rapidly and economic and social measures were taken to prevent a slum formation as a suburb of Lisbon. These include the Quinta de Fonte industrial park , the Valentim de Carvalho sound and television studio , hotels, a shopping center and the Escola Náutica Infante D. Henrique University of Applied Sciences .
The place was raised to a small town ( Vila ) on December 7, 1926 .
