Manuel Tainha (born March 6, 1922 in Paço de Arcos ; † June 18, 2012 ) was a Portuguese architect.

Career

Tainha graduated from the Escola Superior de Belas-Artes de Lisboa (ESBAL) with a degree in architecture in 1950 . He initially worked with Carlos Ramos at the Câmara Municipal of Lisbon until 1954 .

His work includes some paradigmatic buildings of Portuguese architecture of the 20th century, including the Pousada de Santa Bárbara in Oliveira do Hospital (1955-71), the Escola Agro-Industrial in Grândola (1959-63), the Escola de Regentes Agrícolas in Évora (1960–66) or the Torres dos Olivais in Lisbon (1961–67).

He was awarded the Prémio Valmor in 1991 for building the building for the Faculty of Psychology and Education at the University of Lisbon . In 1993 he received the Prémio Nacional de Arquitectura . The International Association of Architects awarded him the Jean Tschumi Prize in 2002.

He also taught architecture at various universities.
