history

The Rua Augusta is the central axis of the Baixa Pombalina, which was rebuilt after the earthquake of 1755 according to plans by Eugénio dos Santos and Carlos Mardel . She was given the name Augusta by decree of November 5, 1760 . This decree also established zones in the street for traders of various goods.

In 1873 the street at the confluence with Praça do Comércio got its monumental start with the Arco da Rua Augusta . On July 28, 1984, the road was closed to car traffic. Today it is one of the central shopping streets in Lisbon.
