Januário Correia de Almeida, Conde de São Januário (born March 31, 1829 in Paço de Arcos , Oeiras ; † May 27, 1901 ) was a Portuguese colonial administrator , diplomat and politician .

Life

Januário Correia de Almeida graduated from the Mathematical Faculty of the University of Coimbra between 1849 and 1853 . He then worked as an engineer officer and in 1860 succeeded Sebastião Lopes de Calheiros e Meneses as governor of Cape Verde . He stayed only a few months at this post and was then replaced on September 6, 1860 by Carlos Joaquim Franco. He was civil governor of Funchal in 1862 and then civil governor of the Braga district between 1862 and 1864 . For his services he was raised to the nobility on February 10, 1866 as Barão de São Januário and on September 9, 1867 toVisconde de São Januário raised. On May 7, 1870, he replaced José Ferreira Pestana and became Governor General of Portuguese India . He held this position until December 10, 1871 and was then replaced by Joaquim José Macedo e Couto .

Subsequently, Almeida took over on March 23, 1872 from António Sérgio de Sousa the function of governor of Macau and held this until 1874, whereupon José Maria Lobo de Ávila succeeded him there. He was then from 1874 to 1875 envoy to the Chinese Empire and as such also accredited to the Japanese Empire and the Kingdom of Siam . In 1876 he became the first president of the newly founded Geographical Society of Lisbon (Sociedade de Geografia de Lisboa) and in 1877 handed over this function to José Vicente Barbosa du Bocage . He was between July 3, 1880 and March 25, 1881 Minister for the Navy and Colonies (Ministro da Marinha e do Ultramar) in the government of Prime Minister Anselmo José Braamcamp . Most recently he was Minister of War (Ministro da Guerra) in the government of Prime Minister José Luciano de Castro from February 20, 1886 to November 9, 1889 . He was also elevated to Conde de São Januário on April 27, 1889 . Most recently he was president of the Portuguese Archaeological Society (Associação dos Arqueólogos Portugueses) between 1896 and his death in 1901 .
