Foz do Arelho is a municipality ( freguesia ) in the Portuguese district of Caldas da Rainha . It has 1,339 inhabitants (as of June 30, 2011).

history

Foz do Arelho has been recorded as a taxable town since 1580. In 1919 it became an independent municipality (Freguesia) when the area was detached from the municipality of Serra do Bouro . In 2009 the place was raised to a vila (small town).

In 1892 the British passenger ship Roumania sank off the coast of the town . Part of the wreck is aground off the coast.

Culture, sports and sights

The beach of Foz do Arelho

The local beach has been awarded the Blue Flag and is popular with bathing tourists and water sports enthusiasts. The Óbidos lagoon is ideal for bird watching, and various water sports can be practiced here, in particular surfing , rowing and kiteboarding .

The small museum Núcleo Etnográfico shows the history of the place in a permanent exhibition using traditional everyday objects and other exhibits. The primary school building also houses the community library and, during the summer months, the town's tourist information office.

economy

Fishing and algae production in the local Óbidos lagoon are traditionally important. Today, however, tourism plays a more decisive role in the town, with a large number of restaurants and hotels. Ua which maintains Inatel facilities here, including a campsite exists here.
