Maçãs de Dona Maria is a municipality (" Freguesia ") in the district (" Concelho ") Alvaiázere , in central Portugal .
geography
Located on the mountains of the Serra de Santa Helena and on the Ribeira d`Alge river, the landscape is characterized by mixed forests and small-scale agriculture. The place is about 10 km northeast of the district town of Alvaiázere.
history
The place has been documented since the time the nation was founded by King Dom Afonso Henriques and the circles he created. On November 12, 1514, King Manuel I created the circle ("concelho") of Maçãs de Dª Maria, which was newly formed from parts that were previously assigned to the circles Penela , Albergaria-a-Velha and Figueiró dos Vinhos . During the territorial reforms in 1855, the district was dissolved and incorporated into the Figueiró dos Vinhos district. In 1895 the area became part of Ansião County , and since 1898 it has belonged to Alvaiázere County.
