Takashi Yamashita ( Japanese 山下 貴司 , Yamashita Takashi ; born September 8, 1965 in Okayama , Okayama Prefecture ) is a Japanese politician of the Liberal Democratic Party ( Ishiba faction ), member of the Shūgiin , the lower house of the national parliament , for the constituency of Okayama 2 and former Minister of Justice .

Life

Yamashita was born on September 8, 1965 in Okayama. He studied law at the University of Tokyo and then became a prosecutor . After positions in the Justice Department and as a lecturer  in law at Keiō University  , he came to the Japanese Embassy in Washington, DC In 1997, he completed postgraduate studies at Columbia Law School as part of the Fulbright program . In 2010 he left the Ministry of Justice.

In the 2012 general election , he ran as a candidate for the Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) in the constituency of Okayama 2 against the Democrat Keisuke Tsumura  and a CPJ candidate. Yamashita won the constituency with 52.8% of the vote; Tsumura moved into the lower house through the Chūgoku proportional representation . In the 2014 and 2017 elections , Yamashita was able to defend its constituency with similar results. In 2017 he became “Parliamentary State Secretary” in the Ministry of Justice and in the Cabinet Office .

Prime Minister Shinzō Abe appointed Yamashita as Justice Minister in the reshaped Abe fourth cabinet in October 2018 . In September 2019, Katsuyuki Kawai replaced him in the cabinet that was again restructured .
