The Tai Hu ( Chinese 太湖 , Pinyin Tài Hú - "very large lake") is the third largest freshwater lake in China with 2,250 km² . It is located in the Yangtze River Delta in the south of Jiangsu Province near the city of Wuxi .
The lake is known for the Taihu stones , perforated and bizarrely shaped limestones, which are mainly used in Chinese horticulture. The best view of Tai Hu is from Xihui Park ( 錫惠公園 / 锡惠公园 , Xīhuì Gōngyuán ), west of Wuxi at the Dragon Light Pagoda ( 龍 光塔 / 龙 光塔 , Lóngguāngtǎ ).
The lake itself is only 2 meters deep on average and has around 90 islands. It is connected to the Imperial Canal and is the main source of water for several rivers, including the Suzhou .
Islands-peninsulas
From an agricultural point of view, the lake islands are fruit-growing and fishing islands. The main fruit product is mandarins. Freshwater crabs are a delicacy in the fishing industry. Since the swelling of the metropolitan areas of Shanghai and Suzhou, the islands have been expanded into recreational areas. The peninsulas, archipelago around Xishanzhen and the northern shore strip are in rapid upheaval.

Agriculture
- The cultivation of mandarins dominates on the barren lake islands.
- Fish traps are often used in fishing . The specialty of the lake are freshwater crabs.
Sports
For several years, the Chinese Cycling Association held alongside the Tour de Bejing the tour Tour of Taihu Lake around the Tai Hu. The races have UCI status and are eligible for GS1 professional teams. The race 150 km west of Shanghai arouses rather moderate media interest and is being carried out by the Chinese decision-makers for reasons of prestige.
environmental issues
Although environmentalists such as Wu Lihong warned of an environmental catastrophe , the lake overturned in 2007 due to a massive blue algae bloom , so that several megacities such as B. Wuxi briefly ran out of drinking water. As a result, it was announced that 2000 chemical plants would be closed. In 2010, Wu Lihong said none of the factories were closed, but blue-green algae were being removed from the lake by boat. The Tai Hu was incorporated into the List of bodies of water added for which funds from the Fund for National Large- Scale Scientific and Technical Projects were to be used to develop wastewater treatment technologies for the high-pollution industries on their banks. On May 7, 2015, Georg Schütte and Cao Jianlin, State Secretaries at the Federal Ministry of Education and Research and the Ministry of Science and Technology , signed a declaration of intent on scientific and technological cooperation, on the basis of which the Sino-German Water Network or 中德 水 网络, usually abbreviated to SIGN because of the English name "Sino-German Network", was founded.
Under the direction of the water technology center of the German Gas and Water Association , numerous German and Chinese universities and several German companies are working there to adapt proven technologies and concepts from Germany specifically to the framework conditions in China. SIGN does not deal with industrial companies, but primarily with the urban wastewater of the metropolises of Wuxi and Suzhou as well as the pollutant input from agriculture. Another focus is the treatment of drinking water, in particular the removal of toxic blue-green algae through membrane filtration and chemical oxidation.
