Georg Schütte (born October 26, 1962 in Rheine ) is a German media and communication scientist. He has been Secretary General of the Volkswagen Foundation since January 1, 2020 . From December 2009 to August 2019, Schütte was State Secretary in the Federal Ministry of Education and Research .

Career

After graduating from high school Dionysianum in Rheine , Schütte studied journalism from 1984 at the University of Dortmund and Television and Radio at the City University of New York and graduated in 1989 with a Master of Arts . Between 1989 and 1994 he conducted research for his doctorate in the DFG Collaborative Research Center 240 “Screen Media” at the University of Siegen . From 1993 to 1994 he was a research fellow at the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation in Bonnactive. From 1995 to 1998 he returned to the University of Siegen as a research assistant and held teaching positions at various universities, including Lüneburg, Mannheim and Dortmund. He then headed the policy department of the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation until 2001. From 2001 to 2003 he was managing director of the German-American Fulbright Commission in Berlin. During this time he was a member of the EU Commission's benchmarking human resources expert group . In 2004 he returned to Bonn and became Secretary General of the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation. In December 2009, Annette Schavan appointed him to the Federal Ministry of Education and Research as State Secretary . On June 28, 2019, the Board of Trustees of the Volkswagen Foundation elected Schütte as the new Secretary General. He took office on January 1, 2020, succeeding Wilhelm Krull .
