The Bukhansan National Park ( 북한산 국립 공원 ) is located in the immediate vicinity of the South Korean capital Seoul and can be reached via several stops on the Seoul subway .

Location and geography

The park is located in the north of Seoul and is divided in half by the Uiryeong Pass. The northern part is formed by the Dogbogsan Mountains, the southern part belongs to the Bukhansan Mountain. Although the mountains of the park are relatively low at around 800 meters, the granite formations such as the Insudong are very popular to climb.

Flora and fauna

Despite the proximity to the city and the large number of visitors, the park is home to more than 1,300 species of animals and plants, including Forsythia saxatilis , a species of forsythia that is only found in Korea. The great spotted woodpecker is also at home in this park.

Attractions

The origins of the mountain fortress Bukhansanseong go back to the year 132 BC. It owes its current expansion with the 12.7 km long wall, the 12 gates and 120 rooms to the building work of King Sukjong.

Hwagyesa Temple is a great way to get away from the hustle and bustle of the big city. This is where the Seoul International Zen Center is located.
