The Juwangsan National Park ( 주왕산 국립 공원 ) is the smallest national park in South Korea and is located in the South Korean province of Gyeongsangbuk-do , about ten kilometers west of the district of Yeongdeok-gun . The highest mountain in the park is the 721 m high Juwangsan .

Location and geography

This national park is a bit out of the way. Neither the Korean expressways nor the network of Korean high-speed trains pass this national park. The nearest major city is Daegu and is 60 km as the crow flies in the southwest direction of the park. The mountains are much lower in their total height than those in other mountain national parks, but the canyons are much narrower. The Jusanji Reservoir, which was created in 1720, also belongs to the park.

Flora and fauna

The special features of the flora and fauna are next to the Ural and the Otter some irises species . A total of 88 plant and 924 animal species have so far been counted in the park.

Trivia

The national park is one of the most secluded parks in South Korea. Since the Korean director Kim Ki-duk shot the film Spring, Summer, Autumn, Winter… and Spring (2003) at the Jusanji Reservoir, the park has attracted more visitors. But there are still considerably fewer than in popular parks such as Gyeongju National Park or Odaesan National Park . The hiking trail through the Jungsa Valley was voted one of the ten most beautiful hiking trails in South Korea.

Events

Every year at the end of April and beginning of May the Juwangsan Sudallae Festival takes place, with which the flowering of the rhododendron species Sudallae ( Rhododendron yedoense var. Poukhanense ) is celebrated. In February, the annual Juwangsan Ice Ridge Climbing Competition takes place in the Eoruemgol Valley.
