The Woraksan National Park ( 월악산 국립 공원 ) is located about ten kilometers east of the city of Chungju.
Location and geography
The national park is part of the Sobaek Mountains and can be quickly reached from the metropolitan areas via expressways 45 and 55 . The park has a special feature: As the only mountain national park in South Korea , it can also be reached by boat. There is a pier for boats on the bank of the Chunju Reservoir. The highest point is the 1094 m high Woraksan, from which one has a very good view of the reservoir in the valley. However, the climb to this mountain is very demanding, but there are some smaller peaks that offer similar views. The Haneuljae Pass, located at an altitude of 530 m between the Poam (963 m) and Juheul (1106 m) mountains, was the most important connection between the southwest and southeast parts of Korea in the Silla and Goryeo times .
Flora and fauna
To date, 1200 plant species have been counted in the park, including rare species such as Lilium cernuum , while pine and Mongolian oak are very common tree species . The animal species in the park are divided into 17 mammal, 67 bird, 10 amphibian, 14 reptile and 1092 insect species, plus 27 species of fish in the reservoir. The national park is also home to around 20 specimens of the very shy long-tailed gore .
