The long-tailed goral ( Naemorhedus caudatus ) is a cloven-hoofed species from the goat-like group (Caprinae). Formerly it was combined with the Chinese Goral to one kind.

features

Long-tailed gorals are stocky, goat-like animals. Their fur is grayish in color, the throat is lighter, and a dark line of eel extends on the back . Both sexes have short, backward-curved horns.

distribution and habitat

These animals live in southeastern Russia ( Khabarovsk and Primorye ), in northeastern China ( Heilongjiang and Jilin ) and on the Korean peninsula . Their habitat are mountainous lands lined with trees.

Way of life

Long-tailed gorals , like all gorals, are excellent climbers. They go looking for food mainly in the morning and evening. They eat grass, leaves and other plant material. They live in small groups, but older males are solitary.

threat

The main threats for the long-tailed gorals are clearing of the forests and hunting. The situation is particularly precarious in South Korea , where only around 250 of these animals live. But there is also a population in the demilitarized zone between the two Korean states. In some reserves in Russia, such as the Sichote-Alin Nature Reserve , breeding programs run in enclosures. In addition, about 200 wild specimens live in the Sichote Alin reserve. The IUCN lists the species as endangered ( vulnerable ).
