The Wolchulsan National Park ( Korean 월출산 국립 공원 ) is the smallest national park in South Korea . The name means in German the mountain on which the moon rises .
Location and geography
The park is the southernmost mountain national park on mainland Korea. It is located between the cities of Ganjin and Mokpo north of National Road 4. The highest point is the 809 m high Cheonhwangbong . At the north end of the park is the town of Yeongam , which many visitors use as a starting point for their forays into the park.
Flora and fauna
There are 693 species of flora in the national park, such as the Japanese evergreen oak and camellia . The 821 animal species are divided into 19 mammal, 79 bird, 31 fish, 14 amphibian and reptile species and 678 types of insects.
Attractions
- Dogapsa Temple . This temple is not as imposing as the temple complexes in other South Korean national parks, but it impresses with its view and has some interesting national treasures of South Korea such as the Haetalmun Gate.
- Cloud bridge . The 52 m long steel bridge is located at a height between two rock needles, in foggy weather you have the feeling of walking above the clouds.
